Dick Smith has always been such an inspiration to me, and to millions of other budding filmmakers and makeup artists. Unlike many makeup artists in his time who liked to keep their techniques a secret, Dick taught everyone anything he could. He even released a series of books and videos with step by step directions on how to make your own monsters at home. He was a revolutionary when it came to his craft, and few have ever shown as much raw talent as he did.
I wish I would have had the chance to meet him, I was always told he was incredibly nice and always quick to tell great stories about being on set of some of the biggest movies in history. A teacher of mine in makeup school once told a story Dick told him. Apparently, on the set of “Everybody’s All American” in 1988, Dick and Dennis Quaid got in a full on fist fight over the aging makeup Dick had put on Quaid!
We sadly lost Dick this past Thursday, July 31, 2014. His legacy will be remembered in the many films he worked his magic on over the years.
Here’s a small sampling of his work over the years:
Stay scary, creeps, it’s what Dick would have wanted.
