The Demonologist stars Brian Krause, Manon Pages, Jared Bankens, Lara Grice, and Kate Tumanova. It will be released On Demand on Jan. 1, 2018 by Uncork’d Entertainment.
The Demonologist is a throwback to Satanic movies of the 60’s and 70’s. Recently, this subgenre has gained popularity again with such films as Hereditary and The Witch. The notion that demons can be summoned to earth and ultimately destroy it is a concept that gives us goosebumps.
That is where The Demonologist comes in. Brian Krause plays a detective who is investigating a series of ritualistic murders. He grew up witnessing demonic possession, though late in the film it takes him a while to agree that this isn’t your usual serial killer.
There are scenes and dialogue that are a little over-the-top (his dream sequences with Mederith/past scenes) but overall it does make for a good plot. The way that everyone close to Krause’s character has a secret agenda (or are bent by evil forces to turn on him), is what made the film compelling for me. I was actually pretty stunned to see some of those fallouts.
Manon Pages plays a delightfully devilish demon. There is one scene where she conjures up images of Elizabeth Bathory. The Demonologist doesn’t skip out on blood, though most of the murders do cut scenes. There is even one where a heart is being eaten! That bit of business took me back to the 2002 film, Queen of the Damned.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a sequel to The Demonologist. The ending felt like a set up for another film. J.M. Stelly should be proud of his work. Even though his feature was low-budget, he made a solid film out of it with just a few flaws.
Overall, I would rate The Demonologist at 3 out of 5 stars. For those viewers who are fans of Brian Krause, you will want to check out this film.
