American Horror Story: 1984 teaser brings ’80s slasher vibes

American Horror Story is coming back for a ninth season, and this time the series will take a trip back to the 1980s to explore some good ol’ slasher classics.

American Horror Story is coming back. So far, the series has explored some common themes from the genre, such as haunted houses, covens, freak shows, mysterious hotels, asylums, farmhouses, cults and a nuclear disaster. And there are a lot more themes to choose from.

The upcoming season is simply titled 1984 but the story surely won’t be as simple as that. In typical AHS fashion, details are still a mystery, but the first teaser gives us some clues, and if we can trust what we are seeing in it, it all points at it having the potential to become a favorite among horror fans – especially those who are into slasher movies from the 1980s.

With the tagline “Welcome to Camp Redwood. Good luck leaving alive”, FX has released the first trailer for American Horror Story: 1984. The sun is shining bright, teenagers are having fun on their way to Camp Redwood… but little do they know, there’s a masked killer underneath their car. We later see a girl in a canoe being attacked by said killer – an image that brings back some Friday 13th memories.

This season will have both old and new cast members, such as Emma Roberts, Gus Kenworthy, Angelica Ross, Billie Lourd, Cody Fern, Leslie Grossman, John Carroll Lynch, and Matthew Morrison, among others. However, Murphy regular, Evan Peters is absent. The actor appeared in every season until now, and according to Deadline, Sarah Paulson will have a smaller role because she is set to star in Murphy’s Netflix series Ratched.

If there’s something we can be sure of it is that the season will be nothing like the teaser leads us to believe. But isn’t that the purpose and the magic of them? And the team behind AHS surely knows how to intrigue their audience.

Don’t worry, we won’t have to wait long to see what 1984 is really about. For now, we can make a list of the movies that might be referenced. American Horror Story: 1984 will premiere on September 18 on FX.
