Much like his father Allen, Ben is not happy about being turned away from the prison after his mother died there. From his point of view, it’s a little understandable. Still, Tyreese cannot support their plan of taking the prison, nor is he as eager to join the Woodbury army and attack them.

Stepping into the battlefield however turns out to be a big mistake for Ben. He is present when Merle lures the Governor and some soldiers to a meeting spot where he thinks he will be given Michonne. From a vantage point, Merle stars shooting at the Woodbury men, killing several in the process.

Merle sees that he has a clear shot at the Governor, and takes the chance to take him out. However, clueless Ben steps in front of the Governor at the last second, taking the bullet instead. This kills Ben, and later we can see his corpse being feasted upon by a zombified Merle.
