13. Season 2, American Horror Story: Asylum, episode 10, “The Name Game”

Why it’s so frightening: Even though “The Name Game” features one of our favorite scenes in the entire series (yes, THAT dance number with Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, and the rest of the cast), this episode is also one of the most frightening in season two. There’s a double meaning behind this fun scene. Underneath it all, there’s heartbreaking darkness. Jude is going crazy from the madness going on the asylum.

Dr. Arden (James Cromwell) continues his cruel and inhumane experiments, but puts a quick stop to it once he sees his beloved Sister Eunice enjoys the cruelty. Thankfully, and finally, the evil doctor meets his end. He’s not the only character to die in “The Name Game,” though, Sister Eunice (Lily Rabe) also does. She commits suicide with the help of the Monsignor, unable to escape the evil that has possessed her. It’s Dr. Arden who volunteers to be the one who cremates Eunice (of course), and he gets into the box with her and burns.

Even before all that, Eunice’s love and desire for torture is frightening alone. It’s even too much for Dr. Arden, and that’s saying something!
