5. Before I Wake

Release: 2016

Directed by Mike Flanagan

Written by Mike Flanagan and Jeff Howard

Starring Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane, Jacob Tremblay, Annabeth Gish, and Dash Mihok

"Still mourning the death of their son, Mark and Jessie welcome foster child Cody into their lives. Soon they discover he has a strange ability."

If you’re a parent, you can instantly relate when parents are grieving to the loss of a child in horror films. Pet Sematary is an easy example of that. Similarly, Before I Wake begins with a couple mourning their lost child. They adopt a child whose dreams  can become “real”, but of course, nightmares come with that too…

Listen. Before I Wake is a really, really awesome movie. Mike Flanagan has a few films on this list as a really talented horror director, but by far, Before I Wake is his best work to date.
