Merle’s group of Michonne hunters was cut in half, literally, by Michonne after killing Tim and Crowley. Merle and the rookie, Gargulio, give chase, though they are unable to actually capture Michonne. Feeling she is as good as dead, Merle is content to go back to Woodbury and tell the Governor that they killed her.

However, Gargulio isn’t willing to lie to the Governor like Merle is. To keep him from talking, Merle asks Gargulio if he hears a nearby bird squawking in the trees. When the young man looks, Merle shoots him in the head, killing him.
