Terrifier 3 just hit theaters this past weekend, and the internet was buzzing about the over-the-top gore. These infamous gory scenes had people fleeing the theater and reportedly throwing up. If you’re anything like me, you love movies with gore that leaves your jaw hanging open and wanting more. The films on this list are relatively popular and widely known for their ability to not hold back and lean into the gross, depraved brutality of horror movies. (Don't worry, A Serbian Film is NOT on this list!)

Terrifier trilogy

Obviously, we’ll kick off this list with the Terrifier trilogy since we just got the new installment. Terrifier is quickly becoming a cult classic and deserving of the attention. Terrifier follows the demented Art The Clown, who has developed an extremely high kill count. These killings are anything but average and are known for being absolutely brutal and over the top.

The killings range anywhere from crazy chainsaw kills to a controversial bedroom scene that gave the Terrifier movies the notoriety. The gore within the franchise can seem so over the top that, at times, it's almost laughable. For others, the movies fall flat with the random plot points, and some people have issues with the gnarly kill scenes that just aim to shock.

Evil Dead franchise

The first Evil Dead (1981) was highly controversial at the time due to some intense scenes. Director Sam Raimi was not concerned with censorship and pushed to make the movie as gory as possible. Despite its controversial release, Evil Dead has become an iconic franchise and continues to grow a fan base as the films have been remade.

Evil Dead Rise (2023) revamped the fanbase with just as much gore and shocking possessions. Although, I am a huge fan of the 2013 Evil Dead because of the final scene where it rains blood (it's awesome). However, all of the movies within the franchise are worth a watch for the well-known chainsaw kills, as well as the insane amounts of blood and pure chaos. The Necronomicon (Book of the Dead) continues to wreak havoc on friends and family where no one is safe, including kids.

Saw franchise

Saw is another extremely popular movie that is known for its gore. The Saw franchise has 10 installments and even more to come. What makes these movies surprisingly successful is that despite the gore, they can hold the audience's attention with a plot.

These films get a bad reputation because of the impossible traps and unusual kills. However, they are undoubtedly iconic, and I'm sure everyone knows about the over-the-top traps that get crazier in every movie. The traps make for fun and creative kills that you can't see coming or understand until someone dies an extremely brutal death.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a horror movie classic that everyone knows or has at least heard of. This movie is highly influential to the horror genre and has had many remakes and spin-offs to keep the story alive. Upon its release, the film was banned in multiple countries because of its violence.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is not as gory as some others on this list, but it is still a theme in the movie. It leans more towards disturbing, with hints at cannibalism and inbreeding. Not to mention that Leatherface is wearing a mask made of human skin.

The Human Centipede: First Sequence (2009)

I already apologize in advance for putting this movie on the list. However, I can't avoid the fact that this movie is insanely gross and depraved, and to me, beyond gory. The first time I watched The Human Centipede, I felt nauseous for the first time watching a horror movie. This is another film that was banned in a lot of countries for its pure obscenity and grotesque nature.

Everyone groans and complains about this movie, which is a just and fair opinion. However, some people enjoy it for the fact that it is unlike any other horror movie and will make any audience member squirm. There are even two more installments after the original film, which are way worse, in my opinion. But people still "enjoy" watching them.

More on this list that I would recommend for the gore lovers:

  • Dead Alive (Braindead) (1993)
  • The Green Inferno (2013)
  • Raw (2016)
  • Hostel (2005)
  • Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
