Ten horror film remakes that should happen

facebooktwitterreddit

I know a lot of people don’t like remakes, even horror film remakes. I have heard many ask why there aren’t more original films being made. I like originals and I like remakes, good remakes that is. To me, a good remake is the recent Carrie remake. A bad remake, to me, is the recent “remake” Evil Dead.

A good remake takes you along a similar story line as the original, not always exact, with great cast choices and stellar acting. Evil Dead had none of that. It turned what was a great campy horror flick with an awesome leading man into a blood and guts contest with barely a story line (in my opinion).

Complaints aside, there are some movies out there that I would love to see remakes of. There have been enough wins in the remake world lately that I have faith if the right cast, the right director and the right studio were chosen something wonderfully horrific (in a good way) could be done with them.

Christine (1983)

Christine is my favorite Stephen King movie. I love everything about it, especially the car. However, I think that a remake now would bring this movie to a new generations. I think there are many great actors and actresses out there that would help cast this movie and make it a real win. I think Dylan O’Brien (Teen Wolf, Maze Runner) would make an excellent Arnie Cunningham.

More from Horror Movies

The Entity (1982)

This is a very disturbing movie in which a woman is sexually assaulted by a spirit. That being said, I would much rather watch a remake of this any day instead of 50 Shades of Grey. Barbara Hershey plays the tormented woman in the original of this “partially based on a true story” flick. I think that Vera Farmiga would be the perfect actress to make a new generation frightened to go to bed alone at night.

The Stuff (1985)

The stuff is a great movie that shows how addicted people can get to a new fad. Since zombies are a huge thing right now it would be the perfect time to bring back that fluffy white stuff that makes everyone all Stepford-like. Scott Bloom’s young character was the only one in his family that didn’t eat the Stuff. I think the remake could switch to a girl and still pull the story off. Joey King (The Conjuring, Fargo) would be a good choice to fill this role.

Nightbreed (1990)

Bring back Midian! Clive Barker is a wonderful story teller and this tale of the monsters hiding from humanity in the secret world of Midian is a classic. While I love this film as it is, I think it could definitely benefit from a bit of a refresher. The monsters could definitely be a bit scarier with today’s cinematic technology. I don’t have any specific choices for who should fill what role, just don’t cast Nicolas Cage.

Alice, Sweet Alice (1976)

Just like the majority of the movies from the 70s horror scene, this one scared psychologically. It starred a young Brooke Shields. It is a very frightening movie, and made the clear mask with women’s makeup popular (and scary as heck). The tagline for the film is, “If you survive this night… Nothing will scare you again.” I believe something new, bloodier, and up-to-date based on this story, the sister blamed for her sisters death, would scare people again. Elle Fanning would be wonderful in the role that Shields played.

The Fly (1986)

Yes, I know this has been remade. However, the remake wasn’t all that terrific. With the technology being used in films now so much more could be done with this story. Imagine what Brundle-fly would look like in CGI. It could be amazing. Again, don’t cast Nicolas Cage. In the original 1958 version with Vincent Price there was no Seth Brundle, in case you forgot.

Cujo (1983)

Aside from some terrible acting on the parts of the humans, there was nothing wrong with this movie. I am sure the dog that played Cujo is long gone by now. However, it wouldn’t be the same unless they cast another St. Bernard. As far as the boy, pick a child that can act this time around. Dee Wallace, although a horror classic in her own right, is synonymous with bad movies now.

Hellraiser (1987)

The filming was too dark. The acting, aside from the monsters, wasn’t that great. Just like Nightbreed, Clive Barker tells a great tale but the computer technology we have now could make this a much more nightmare worthy film. Also, if you’ve never read The Hellbound Heart, which is the novella this film is based on, you’re missing out. I highly recommend it.

Sleepwalkers (1992)

Another Stephen King adaptation, Sleepwalkers tells the tale of a mother and son that are part of a dying breed of supernatural creatures. It stars Alice Krige and Brian Krause as the mom and son duo that are afraid of cats and hungry for a virgin to eat. This was before Brian Krause got his acting chops and made a name for himself on Charmed. Julianna Moore would be a good possible choice for the mom. Evan Peters (American Horror Story) would be the perfect young actor to fill the son’s shoes.

Pet Sematary (1989)

Last, but not least, I would love to see this classic tale of Native American burial grounds bringing the dead back to life come back to life itself. There really is no replacement for Fred Gwynne (The Munsters) in his role as the watchful neighbor, Jud Crandall. Alas, he is no longer with us. I didn’t hate the acting in this one at all, but would just love to see a fresh take on it. A good couple to play the Creeds would be Charlie Hunnam, because he can get that rugged look down, and Jessica Chastain, just because. I hope they pick another cat that looks just like Church.

What horror films would you love to see remade, and why?
