Five Worst Horror Sequels I Have Ever Watched
Exorcist II: The Heretic
How do you follow up one of the all-time greatest, most influential horror movies of all time? Bring in a totally new writer and director, send the sequel off into a totally different direction, and then watch the **** hit the fan!
Seriously – every screenwriter and director involved in an upcoming horror sequel should absolutely be required to watch this pile of garbage. It writes the book on how to poop all over a successful franchise. The movie studio should have realized that the universe just didn’t want a sequel to The Exorcist when neither William Peter Blatty (writer/producer) nor William Friedkin (director) wanted to be involved in a sequel. But if you HAVE to create a sequel without the original filmmakers, don’t you think you should hire someone who kind of LIKED the original?
You think? Well, that’s not what happened! Instead, British director John Boorman (Deliverance) was brought on to direct . . . despite the fact that he had actually turned down a chance to direct The Exorcist due to the fact that he found it repulsive!
The rest is movie history: a not scary, weird, incoherent pile of dog-stuff that almost certainly drove Blatty to write the sequel that he never wanted to (the novel Legion, which later was made into the film The Exorcist III).
