11. Cloverfield (2008)
Godzilla meets found footage in this monsters mash America flick. Like
Diary of the Dead,
Cloverfield
is another film rife with post 9/11 imagery though in the much less subtle guise of the destruction of Manhattan. But, heavy-handed cultural references aside, it is a pretty good film as far as monsters movies go. It doesn’t waste time on exposition trying to explain where the monster came from, and the vertigo-inducing shaky cam gives it that extra edge of realism. Plus, it’s just under an hour and a half, perfect for those of us who don’t have the patience to sit through anything longer.
