The Last Exorcism
is an intimate and chilling portrait of Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) who has lost his faith but still agrees to perform an exorcism on a young girl named Nell (Ashley Bell) under the watch of a documentary film crew . Though it does contain some of the formulaic aspects of your standard possession story, the script is well-paced, not only delivering the mandatory scares, but asking its viewers to reflect on religious and socio-economic questions. And the ending… though hardcore horror audiences might see it coming, is effective and chilling.
