2. The Driller Killer (1979)

Director: Abel Ferrara

I know there are many that would disagree with me, but I love Abel Ferrara. And The Driller Killer, while somewhat slow-paced, makes for some pretty great viewing. In a bit of film history, the film was one of the video nasties banned in the UK back in the day for portraying obscene amounts of violence. The Driller Killer is about artist Reno Miller (Abel Ferrara) who spirals into insanity and begins killing people to fuel his creativity. When Reno’s masterpiece is rejected by an art dealer, he falls completely over the edge.

1. Messiah of Evil (1973)

Directors: Willard Huyck, and Gloria Katz (uncredited)

Arletty (Marianna Hill) discovers her estranged artist father has gone missing when she goes to visit him for the first time in years. She decides to go looking for him even though he leaves behind a diary explicitly telling her not to. She finds herself in a strange Californian seaside town governed by a mysterious undead cult. This is a great horror film that has been severely underrated and overlooked for too long!
