If you’re going to talk about reinterpreting the final girl, you’ve got to talk about Scream. One of the best meta horrors ever, Scream plays with Clover’s traditional idea of the final girl with perfect awareness. The film is so perfect in it’s subversion of the slasher genre, that it’s even been referenced in later meta-horrors. Meta meta horror? Anyway, what makes Scream so great is that it creates the perfect version of a final girl in Sidney, but calls attention to just how trope works withing the slasher as well as establishing the role as a place of empowerment for women in the destruction of the misogynistic killers.
