3. Shane Walsh
Shane had one of the most compelling story arcs on The Walking Dead. The promiscuous policeman started the series as a good guy, and through the course of 2 seasons evolved into a homicidal, obsessive nutjob. Jon Bernthal played the role to perfection, and the metamorphosis of the character was very believable.
Shane had to die because it was either him or Rick. However, in some ways, Shane lives on through Rick, as the latter was forced to eventually adopt the mindset of the former in order to keep the ones he loves safe.
