2. Rick Grimes

The man that kicked off the series, Rick has always been the main character of the show. As the zombie apocalypse had already begun by the time Rick woke up from his coma, the viewers were seeing all of this carnage for the first time right along with him. We basically knew as much as he did going in, which made him easier to relate to.

Not unlike comic Rick, though, Mr. Grimes has made plenty of bad decisions on the show. People have died based on Rick’s choices. At the same time, who knows how many people he wound up saving? His plans don’t always work out as expected, but someone has to take the bull by the horns and do something, and Rick steps up where others don’t.

Rick has struggled with his morality probably more so than any other character. Over the seasons, we’ve seen him trying to decide whether to be good or bad. Ultimately, I think he’s found a balance somewhere in between, leaning more to the side of good — but he’ll always have the spirit of Shane in him. In the end, they were two sides of the same coin.
