‘The Walking Dead’: Each Season’s Saddest Death

Sophia (Season 2, Episode 8)

We lost several key names from our main group during the show’s sophomore season. The moral compass of the group, Dale, passed away after getting disemboweled by a sneaky walker. Rick’s best friend, Shane, also died after a failed attempt to kill Rick and steal his family. But there was another death that happened earlier that was much more devastating.

Obviously, I’m talking about Sophia. When the young girl vanished into the woods early into the season, I wasn’t very worried about her. She’s a major character from the comic series, so I just assumed she’d naturally find her way back and rejoin the group. As the search for her went on, I was itching for her to just get back to the crew already.

Of course, that’s not what happened. When a zombie Sophia shuffled her way out of the barn in the Season 2 mid-season finale, my jaw fell to the floor. I had absolutely no idea this was going to occur, so that reveal hit me so much harder than it otherwise would have.

Sophia was such a sweet girl, and it was heartbreaking to see her dead— as well as the effect it had on Carol, Daryl, and the rest of the group.
