5. Patrick Dempsey was hired the day before he began filming.

These days, a lot of people forget that Patrick Dempsey was in Scream 3. Dempsey had a major role as Mark Kincaid, a detective tasked with investigating the newest Ghostface murders during the events of Scream 3. He was considered to be one of the killers at one point during the writing, but ultimately winds up as a survivor that pursues a romance with Sidney at the end of the film.

The role of Detective Kincaid was so up in the air that it wasn’t even cast until the day before shooting began. At very much the last minute, Patrick Dempsey was cast in the part, giving him basically one night to memorize several pages worth of dialogue. The actor would go on to star on Grey’s Anatomy a few years later, and opt not to return for Scream 4 to film a Transformers movie instead.

Dempsey’s character showed a lot of interest in horror movies, as well as the “real life” story of Sidney Prescott and the Ghostface killings in Woodsboro. He was essentially the new Randy, as Randy had been killed off in Scream 2.

Although, it turns out, Randy could have survived after all…
