8. ‘Stab’ may have actually been directed by Robert Rodriguez

There are plenty of cameos from known actors in Scream 2, including Tori Spelling and Sarah Michelle Gellar (as we mentioned earlier). But a famous director might have also had a “director’s cameo” in a way, by way of being the director of the fake movie in the film, Stab. In a deleted scene, a message reading ‘A Robert Rodriguez Film’ displayed on the movie screen prior to the Stab opening sequence.

That’s not a matter of just saying that Rodriguez directed the film for the sake of a joke. The filmmaker— known for such classics as Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn— possibly actually directed the scenes shown in the film (Casey Becker’s murder from Ghostface and the scene between Sidney Prescott and Billy Loomis) according to widespread rumors online. If these scenes looked pretty well-done for essentially just being a joke movie, it’s because a talented director was actually involved.

While this factoid is plastered all over various Scream fan websites, I still hesitate to label it as being 100% true, as I can’t find further confirmation of it. Rodriguez is not actually listed in the credits of the film, though he could have gone uncredited. Either way, it’s interesting that Rodriguez was listed as the director of the fictional film, and it’s fun to fantasize about what a real Scream-based movie by Rodriguez would actually be like.
