8. Bruce Campbell in My Name is Bruce

This one is different from the others on this list in the sense that, this time, the actor playing himself is the lead character, while the others are mostly small cameos. Horror legend Bruce Campbell acted as a kooky version of himself in the indie film My Name is Bruce which was released in 2007. It’s an entertaining film, but a lack of marketing means that there’s still a lot of fans who haven’t seen it.

Apart from directing and co-producing the flick, Campbell starred as himself— the wisecracking B movie actor from the Evil Dead franchise. Trouble finds its way to Campbell’s door when a group of teenage fans convince him that he is their only hope to stop a real life monster, and the real life Ash finds himself battling a dragon.

It’s pretty much just as spectacularly insane as you’d expect, although it didn’t get quite the same fanfare as the Evil Dead series. Campbell is now back as Ash in the Starz series Ash vs. Evil Dead, but the horror icon has expressed interest in doing a sequel to the film in which he will— get this— fight Frankenstein’s monster.
