Freddy vs. Jason: 10 Things You Didn’t Know
By Jeremy Dick
Bruce Campbell as Ash in Evil Dead II (De Laurentiis Entertainment Group)
1. A comic book sequel starring Evil Dead’s Ash was made
Even before Freddy vs. Jason came out, there were rumors of Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash. It makes sense. Freddy and Jason are two of horror movies’ biggest characters, but they’re both bad guys. Ash is probably the most popular good guy in the history of horror films, so he’d make an excellent balance to the evil vs. evil theme the film had going for it.
Apparently, after Freddy vs. Jason, there was interest in doing the sequel Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash. It was so close to becoming a reality that Bruce Campbell confirmed he had negotiations with New Line Cinema about it. But in the same interview, he mentions that this conversation was dramatically short.
Basically, when New Line called him about reprising the Ash role for the film, Campbell was initially excited. He saw it as the chance for Ash to vanquish both Freddy and Jason once and for all. But, with that, the conversation ended. It seems New Line had some problems with Ash winning the fight. Did they really expect him to lose? Does he reprise the role after all this time just to be killed by Freddy Krueger?

So the feature film never happened, but that doesn’t mean the story didn’t. Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash does exist… as a six issue comic book series. Meanwhile, Campbell eventually did reprise the role of Ash for Ash vs. Evil Dead, an incredible sequel series on Starz that you really need to be watching (if you aren’t already).
