8. Father Gabriel protects Maggie by lying to Negan

Negan has a thing for widows. He says so himself in a conversation with Rick. The Saviors leader says how he loves how they’re empty inside, even if it’s “not for long”. It’s a truly disturbing moment, especially considering Negan is referring to Maggie in particular. Knowing that Glenn was Maggie’s other half, Negan is interested in bringing the widow back with him to the compound.

Rick’s at a loss for words, but none other than Father Gabriel makes the save. Before Rick can say anything about Maggie, Gabe asks Negan if he would like to offer his condolences. In other words, he’s suggesting that Maggie has passed away from her apparent illness. Negan knew Maggie was sick, but not necessarily that she was pregant. So, he buys the story.

To keep it fully believable, Gabriel has even dug up a grave in the Alexandria cemetery. For all intents and purposes, the plan keeps Maggie protected. She’s apparently not in Alexandria, though we can assume she’s being cared for in an undisclosed location. For now, though, she’s well without the grasp of Negan, thanks in part to the brilliance of the priest.
