3) Michael Dougherty’s Krampus (2015)

Released only a year ago, Krampus is slaying at number three on our list of best Christmas horror.

Directed by Michael Dougherty’s, who gave us the masterpiece, Trick r’ Treat, Krampus is the perfect mix of holiday and horror. With its gleeful gore and Christmas carnage, there isn’t a horror film that does the holiday better than Krampus. Which, or course, is seemingly Dougherty’s specialty.

Sure, I have me problems with Krampus. In fact, there’re big problems with tone and narrative. And while it’s nowhere near the brilliance of his first feature, the emerging filmmaker does the Christmas part of the film perfectly. The film’s family could be your family, and the worst parts of the December holiday are on full display.

For that, the film is a gift. For you to open, year after year.
