‘The Wizard of Oz’ Horror Version Being Developed

Dorothy’s adventures in Oz are about to get a whole lot darker, as New Line is developing a horror version of the classic tale.

The Wizard of Oz is almost a horror story as it is. Dorothy begins her journey into Oz by being sucked into a tornado and killing a wicked witch. She must befriend a talking lion, a scarecrow, and a tinman, all of whom are kind of creepy. And she even has to trek through a Haunted Forest at one point in her adventure.

It seems that the folks at New Line Cinema are also recognizing the easy transition into horror. THR reports that the studio is putting into works a horror film version of the story. The pitch comes from writer Mike Van Waes, although imdb is listing this project as his only credited film work so far.

There are not yet any other details on this movie. We only know that it’s an original story and a horror version of The Wizard of Oz. No idea either as to whether this will be bloody enough to garner an R rating. But if you’re gonna do this, then you should do it right, so I say go ahead and up the body count for this one.

The original film, starring Judy Garland as Dorothy, first hit theaters all the way back in 1939. It has since seen all kinds of different renditions of the story, although they’re mostly pretty similar. As far as I know, this is the first “horror” version of the tale. But it sound intriguing.
