4. Mr. Mercedes

Mr. Mercedes is the first novel in a book trilogy from the King. As King is sometimes wont to do, he breaks away from the horror mold to take on a different kind of story. This time, he’s doing a hard-boiled detective story about Bill Hodges, a retired detective who finds himself taunted by a mass murderer. The third and final book in the series, End of Watch, just hit store shelves in 2016. But an on-screen adaptation of the story is already on the way.

It was back in 2015 when rumblings of adapting these books first made the rounds. It has since spent some time on the backburner, but is now said to finally be in production. Mr. Mercedes will be a 10 episode mini-series to air on television, with King serving as executive producer. We are still waiting to get an official release date, but at last word, the project is set to premiere in the fall of 2017.

In a sad footnote to this adaptation, the late Anton Yelchin had been tapped to star as the murderer in the story, Brady Hartsfield. His passing meant his role had to be recast, with Harry Treadaway taking on the role. Brendan Gleeson co-stars as Bill Hodges.
