8. Leatherface (2017)

The next film in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series isn’t out yet as of this writing, with a premiere date set for later this fall. But there are some things we do know about the film, which we can do ahead and use to talk about its timeline.

Leatherface will be a prequel to the 1974 original film by Hooper. While that movie has multiple timelines branching out from it, this will be the first prequel to take place prior. Filmmakers have said that this prequel will be using the TCM ’74 and TCM 3D timeline. It will focus on Leatherface as a teenager busting out of the psych ward, meaning it has to take place several years prior to 1973 — presumably the early to mid 1960s.

Usually these movies have an opening narration which explains exactly when (or at least what year) the movie is taking place. We’ll have to see if Leatherface includes one of these, which will give us a better idea as to this film’s timeline. But if we are able to count this one along with TCM and the new timeline established by 3D, that will mark the first time three films in the franchise are actually able to share some kind of continuity.
