2. A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge

Without a doubt, the second film in the A Nightmare on Elm Street series has gotten a lot of hell over the years. It’s gotten a bit of a cult following in more recent years as people are warming up to it in retrospect. Perhaps just because it’s stuffed in there between the two movies with Nancy, some fans didn’t treat it as the “real” sequel to the original.

In this sequel, Jesse Walsh (Mark Patton) moves into Nancy Thompson’s house five years after the events of the first film. That’s when our old friend Freddy jumps back in action, haunting Jesse’s nightmares. This time, Freddy possesses Jesse’s body to kill his victims, thriving on the young man’s fear. It’s a terrifying concept to think about Freddy taking control of your body to force you to kill your own friends. The make-up is phenomenal as well — I dare say that Englund as Freddy is even scarier in this film than he was in the original.

The hate that this film has gotten over the years baffles me. But then again, this was one of the very first horror movies I ever saw, and the one that made me fall in love with the genre. I’ll always have a certain nostalgia for it. At the same time, I do believe it’s a legitimately awesome sequel that deserves more credit.
