In 1984, Wes Craven became an icon with his sleeper hit, A Nightmare on Elm Street. Along with showing Craven’s full genius, the film showcases one of film’s best villains and heroines. And after some dreamy fighting, Freddy is vanquished (hopefully) forever. Of course, the burned one comes back and keeps sharpening his blades — eventually sticking them into Nancy Thompson.

As epic as Nancy’s death is, killing off the series best character (sans Freddy) is a huge mistake. While it could be argued she’d run her course, great protagonists are hard to come by. And if you’re lucky enough to have a genius create one for your series (looking at you New Line), don’t kill her off. Well, at least not in a film bringing back that character after an ill-advised departure.
