Hulu’s Deadbeat is your next binge-worthy TV series
By Devin Shea
If the Hulu original series Deadbeat has slipped under your radar, we’re here to tell you why it needs to be the next TV show for you to binge watch.
I recently discovered the wonderful place that is Hulu. While I’ve known about Hulu for years, I’ve always been a Netflix kind of girl and didn’t give it a second thought. But I jumped on the Hulu bandwagon and boy, am I glad I did.
I’m pretty picky about my shows. I like paranormal or horror themed shows but I don’t like them to take themselves too seriously. That’s why I have always been such a big fan of Supernatural. Luckily, I stumbled across a show called Deadbeat.
I have been a fan of Tyler Labine since Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. I think he’s funny and adorable and he does horror comedy so well. He also did a horror comedy called Cottage Country which was…bizarre to say the least but just further showed his acting chops in the horror comedy genre.
And lest we not forget his foray into ghost communication in the early 2000’s show, Dead Last…I see a trend here. Read on and you’ll see why.
Well, he’s at it again in this Hulu original. Now, full disclosure, Hulu decided not to renew the show after three seasons, which I believe is a damn travesty. The show is funny, sad, sweet and a great dose of horror and the paranormal while keeping you laughing.
The show follows Kevin Pacalioglu, a medium that is far from having his life together. While trying to help spirits go into the light, he tries to catch the attention of famous “medium,” big fat faker and all around awful person Chamomile White (Cat Deeley, So You Think You Can Dance) and her sweet, abused assistant Sue (Lucy Devito, The Comedian).
While there is the linear story surrounding Chamomile White, each episode for the most part behaves as a stand-alone, ghost-of-the-week style episode. The first and second seasons are delightful with some actual emotional moments and laugh out loud episodes. My only complaint is the giant shift in tone and style in Season 3.
It may have been that shift that caused the cancellation. It turned from a light-hearted and funny ghost show to just another stoner comedy. With Kal Penn being added to the docket in Season 3, it feels like they may as well have spent the whole season trying to find the nearest White Castle. While Season 3 is truly give or take, Seasons 1 and 2 of Deadbeat are truly worth the binge-watch.
