We have all heard strange noises at night. More often than not, it is something ordinary that makes us jump and then we laugh about it. Sometimes, it is not ordinary and it could signal that an unwanted intruder is in the house.
What is even more creepy is the notion that someone could break into your home or apartment and watch you while you sleep. As I sit here typing this article in the early morning hours in my office, my house is preternaturally quiet. Even ordinary silence can sometimes cause shivers up and down the spine.
Who’s There?
Our story begins on a typical night. A woman and her adorable young dog were fast asleep. Nothing was unusual. However, around three o’clock in the morning, she was awakened by an unfamiliar sound.
Groggy and a little disoriented, she reached down to pet her constant companion. She felt him lick her hand. Turning over, she immediately went back to sleep.
The next morning, her alarm went off. Stretching, she got out of bed and headed into the bathroom to start her daily routine. Walking over to the shower, she drew the curtain back to reveal a terrifying sight.
Her beloved puppy was lying dead in the tub. His neck was broken. She let out a blood curdling scream. Running back to her bedroom to grab her cell phone to call the police, she noticed a piece of paper by her bedside.
It was a note. Hesitating, she finally bent down to pick the piece of paper up. What it said, almost made her faint. “Humans can lick too.” Who entered her house and why did they kill her dog?
Did they have nefarious intentions or did they just want to watch her sleep preparing for another moment in time to kill her? How did the person get in?
Sometimes it is better to be left in the dark. Then again, you might want to keep a night light on. You never know what may be lurking in the shadows waiting for that perfect moment.
