Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
From the get go, this animated flick won me over. The story of Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) is relatable on many different levels. Flint is different from everyone in his town. No one gets him but his mother.
He has big dreams that he could invent a machine that will feed the world. Until he can get it working properly, he has to deal with his father, Tim (James Caan) who wants him to join the family business. The idea behind his device is that it will turn water into food.
Bruce plays Mayor Shelbourne a rather questionable politician who is looking for a scheme to put his town back on the map after the main business, the sardine factory has closed its doors. Basically, he exploits Flint’s invention for his own purposes.
When Lockwood discovers that his machine isn’t working the way that it should, a potential catastrophe ensues. Campbell puts everything he has into his portrayal of the mayor. Equally conniving, charming and funny, Bruce uses his voice masterfully.
Shelbourne isn’t just a cartoon, he becomes a living, breathing character in the hands of Campbell.
