Welcome Back, Fede

Two years ago, Fede Alvarez was tearing up the horror scene with Don’t Breathe. Finally, he is back with the movie adaptation of David Lagercrantz’s The Girl in the Spider’s Web. Which is based on the Stieg Larsson series of books featuring the character of Lisbeth Salander.

Yesterday on Twitter, Alvarez gave us a sneak peek of The Crown’s Claire Foy as Salander on the movie poster. He also dropped the trailer to his latest venture.

Foy is best known for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s regal drama. For her role as the computer hacking antisocial genius in The Girl in the Spider’s Web she will be doing a complete 360. The royal garb is being replaced by tattoos, piercings and head to toe black leather.

Fans of the movies identify Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara with Lisbeth Salander. However, according to Entertainment Weekly, Alvarez sees his film as “the next chapter in the series” rather than a sequel to David Fincher’s 2011 interpretation.

The Power of Justice

In Fincher’s film there was a particularly brutal scene involving Salander and her Conservator who had been molesting her regularly. Well, in The Girl in the Spider’s Web, Lisbeth is still a woman who takes matters into her own hands when it comes to meting out justice to abusers.

This time her method of choice involves a taser. Joining Foy in the cast is Sverrir Gudnason (Borg vs McEnroe) as Mikael Blomkvist, Lakeith Stanfield who plays an NSA agent that is trying to track down the elusive Lisbeth and Sylvia Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049).

The most interesting casting choice is Stephen Merchant. Merchant is predominantly known as a comedian and the sidekick of Ricky Gervais. However, it is exciting to see him in a thriller where he plays a computer engineer who in Fede’s words, “triggers the big plot of the movie.”

You can catch The Girl in the Spider’s Web in theaters November 9. After seeing the compelling trailer, this film is bound to be another box office smash for Alvarez.
