Wellington Paranormal: Watch the first trailer for NZ spin-off show

From the hilarious minds of What We Do in the Shadows comes a spin-off series, Wellington Paranormal and it just dropped its first trailer.

I have a love/hate relationship with vampires that have always leaned more heavily towards the hate end of the spectrum. I’ve just never understood the fascination. That is until What We Do in the Shadows came along.

This mockumentary following roommate vampires in New Zealand pleases me on so many levels (I was already a huge fan of Flight of the Conchords), it remains one of my favorite horror comedies of all time. And the fun isn’t over yet with the new a spin-off show, Wellington Paranormal, who just dropped their new series trailer.

What We Do in the Shadows was written and directed by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) and Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and hailed from New Zealand (“Lord of the Rings…Frodo…The Ring”). It starred Waititi as Viago, Clement as Vladislav, Jonny Brugh as Deacon and Ben Fransham as Petyr.

The film features a documentary crew that follows the group before the largest vampire party of the year. It was a new concept, intensely funny and you just love the characters. You even love the werewolves led by fellow Flight of the Conchords star Rhys Darby as Anton, the lead werewolf (“We’re werewolves, not swear-wolves”). Between the awkwardness of the characters, the bumbling police force and the erotic dancing, this quickly became one of my favorite movies.

It was wildly popular and took off across the world. America is getting their own remake series next spring (although I still haven’t decided how I feel about that yet even with Waititi and Clement involved), a sequel about the werewolves called We’re Wolves and a spin off series about the two ridiculous officers Mike Minogue and Karen O’Leary that appeared in the film along with some new faces. They are head of the “paranormal unit” and Wellington Paranormal is set to follow them as they head off against the creatures causing havoc in the city. According to Birth.Movies.Death, we now have a trailer for the series.

I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is, that Wellington Paranormal looks amazing with the same wit and humor as the movie and it starts on TV2 July 11th! The bad news is that it is only airing in New Zealand. That’s great for our Kiwi readers, but for those outside of New Zealand’s borders, we’re wicked sad. Here’s hoping we get to see it sometime in the near future and aren’t just stuck with the television remake.

If the series is even a fraction as funny as the movie, they have a hit with Wellington Paranormal. If you haven’t seen What We Do in the Shadows, I can’t recommend this movie enough. And, if you have Amazon Prime, you can stream it for free!
