“There’s a whole world of monsters out there, so still plenty of work for Hellboy to do.” – Mike Mignola

Happy 25th, Hellboy

In honor of Hellboy’s first appearance at San Diego Comic Con in 1993, Dark Horse will be adding to the hero’s legacy with three new Mike Mignola books. According to Superfan Promotions press release, Mignola will be returning to SDCC as a Special Guest. The original four-page story that started it all will appear in the 2018 Souvenir Book for the event.

The new titles will be coming out in November and December of this year. Hellboy’s adventures will be global and explore different parts of the “Mignolaverse.”

They will also precede the film that is set to be released on January 11, 2019. David Harbour (Strange Things) is cast as Hellboy. The character will take on Milla Jovovich’s (Resident Evil) Nimue the Blood Queen. Ian McShane (American Gods) will portray Professor Bruttenholm.

The Universe Expands

Let’s take a closer look at the upcoming five issue mini series books first.

Crimson Lotus is the foe of Lobster Johnson who as a child was caught up in the Russo-Japanese war with her family. Thirty years later, she retaliates in a manner that could have terrifying international consequences. Two spies are hot on her trail in China. They must capture her before they end up as “flies in her web.” (Issue #1 on sale on November 21)

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1956 are three different storylines that converge into a well-written espionage thriller. The bureau has to unravel a Soviet cover-up while a demonic occult leader coerces her team into submitting to her desires. While all of that is happening, Hellboy embarks on a mission that will invariably lead to his infamous misadventures in Mexico. Secretive plots abound. (Issue #1 on sale on November 28)

Hellboy Winter Special 2018 is an anthology. In the first tale, Mignola teams up with Ben Stenbeck to recount the story of a New Year’s Eve séance that goes awry when Hellboy visits a family in England.

Fabio Moon and Gabriel Bá re-explore B.P.R.D.: Vampire with a new tie-in story while Lobster Johnson returns with Tonci Zonjic writing and drawing the character. (On sale: December 12)
