With Halloween having its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, early reviews pit the Michael Myers film as the comeback the genre needs.
Early Halloween reviews are in and they are scary good….
USA Today is reporting the new Halloween is something to behold. With the anticipated Blumhouse movie having its premiere at TIFF recently, it marks the first time the free public has seen the film. With expectations higher than any horror movie in recent memory, everyone is waiting to see if returning to Haddonfield is worth the year of hype. Well if recent Toronto traveling critics are to be believed, Halloween candy hasn’t been this sweet in 40 years.

HALLOWEEN is THE FORCE AWAKENS of HALLOWEEN movies: all the stuff you want, plus some new stuff, some dumb stuff, some delightfully remixed stuff. definitely the best time I’ve had at a #TIFF18 screening thus far

David Gordon Green delivers best HALLOWEEN movie since the original & does a smart job w/ its callbacks to the 1st film. Legit scary, & while crazy violent at times, it shows restraint at others. Loved the score. Jamie Lee Curtis is a badass, like Ripley crossed w/ Sarah Connor.

I was always gonna be an easy lay with #HalloweenMovie but they really nailed it. Some will have quibbles — it’s maybe *too* funny, and one little twist might have been too much — but scary AF plus Force Awakens levels of fan service = very good times. #tiff18

#Halloween is vicious! Loved the continuation of Laurie’s story but the pure evil of Michael’s drive to kill and the randomness of it is there and it’s strong. Beautifully shot, score is on point, some great humor and loaded with gore. It’s the complete package.

While some reviews aren’t great (currently 81% on Rotten Tomatoes), the overwhelming consensus is that treats are on the way. I’m not sure there’s been another horror film as anticipated as the reboot/sequel, it being a once in a lifetime situation. So it’s great knowing most are digging what the rest of us have to wait a month to see. I know I’ll be sleeping better tonight knowing the Boogeyman is back in business and looking for repeat customers.
Halloween stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Andi Matichak and Judy Greer. David Gordon Green directs a screenplay from Green, Danny McBride and Jeff Fradley. Blumhouse Productions produces, with Universal Pictures distributing. Michael Myers returns for more tricks Oct.19, 2018.
