Some of the most potentially frightening films have been debuting at one famous film festival after the other — and soon, they will be coming to a theater near you.

As the season of scares descends upon us next month, it becomes a macabre tradition to get involved in horror-related activities for the holiday known as Halloween. For children, this means dressing up as their favorite character from their favorite media (mainly Eleven from Stranger Things and MANY different incarnations of scary clowns). For teenagers and adults, this calls for a time to host Halloween-themed parties, complete with fake eyeballs, spaghetti brains, and a few too many Bloody Marys (please drink responsibly).

While all of that can be fun (minus the Bloody Marys for ol’ sober me), nothing beats watching a good horror film. Whether it’s by yourself or with appropriate company, sitting down and grabbing a bite to eat to watch a potentially frightening scare-fest embodies some of the most beloved aspects of Halloween, especially for self-proclaimed horror buffs who make it their mission to have watched as many horror films as they possibly can.

However, there’s only so many choices currently out in theaters for horror buffs to flock to. The Nun doesn’t seem to have impressed many people, despite its worldwide debut of $136 million, and Slender Man is all but even the slightest bit relevant, thanks to its ill-timed debut. It’s a bit bad for the film that BlacKkKlansman, which debuted on the same weekend and was a spot below Slender Man at the box office, has managed to stay in the top 10, while the latter is lucky to break $1 million for the entire week.

More from Horror Movies

Yeah, the mainstream horror scene isn’t so hot, but that doesn’t mean that there’s nothing to look forward to. As a matter of fact, various film festivals have seen the debuts of some terrifying and potentially terrifying horror flicks that are sure to satisfy the lust for macabre content. From Sundance and Venice to Toronto and Cannes, some of the world’s most acclaimed film festivals boasted some potential barn-burners in their lineup, all of which are set to come out VERY soon. But which films look the most enticing (horrifying)?
