If there’s one thing I was not expecting at all in 2018, it was the beginning of a Nicolas Cage resurgence. Now don’t get me wrong, this isn’t anything like a Matthew McConaughey rebirth, but it’s still a surprising surge of quality Cage content. First, there was his unhinged performance in the Brian Taylor horror-comedy, Mom and Dad, which takes parental advisory to a whole new level. Now, in mere days, we will be seeing Cage dial up the intensity with the surprise Sundance hit, Mandy.
Premiering at Sundance Film Festival, where other acclaimed films like Hereditary, Eighth Grade, and most recently, Searching, have debuted, Mandy takes the route of appearing to be an intense revenge story, with Cage seeking vengeance over the destruction of his peaceful existence. However, the film does this in a surreal, dreamy, almost Suspiria-like atmosphere, complete with extreme coloration and a heavy use of sound editing. Topped off with what many consider to be one of Cage’s genuinely best pest performances ever, Mandy is looking to both entertain and possibly terrify and judging from what has been revealed so far, it may do an exceptional job at just that.
