The Castle Rock Times: It’s the end of the line for season one
By Billy Cripps
Well residents of Elm Street, Castle Rock Season one has come to the end of the line and things still aren’t anymore clear.
"Go, then. There are more worlds than these. ~ Jake Chambers, The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger by Stephen King"
Residents of Elm Street, I’m sad to say I was disappointed with the finale of Castle Rock. Nothing was resolved. It just caused me to have more questions. So needless to say, there are spoilers ahead. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
I had such high hopes for Castle Rock, but somewhere along the line things just went off the rails. We were promised a show set in a Stephen King multiverse that would push up against the work of Stephen King while being it’s own story. Well, they got the ‘it’s own story’ part right.
The best thing about the series was Sissy Spacek and Bill Skarsgard. However everything else just fell flat. It’s like they decided that if the audience couldn’t understand the incoherent story they would think it was good. However, they were wrong.
While the show is a decent watch, the Stephen King references were really few and far between other than the Shawshank prison setting. They reference the warden from King’s story Rita Hayworth And The Shawshank Redemption, or just The Shawshank Redemption for short but not once do they ever mention Andy Dusfresne or his grand escape. It’s not quite as big of a fiasco as the case of the “adaptation” of Stephen King’s Lawnmower Man which just used his name for recognition without actually having anything to do with the story.
I’m afraid that for us Constant Readers the only way we could get a real Stephen King multiverse is if some film or television company were to buy the rights to all of his work. A second season for Castle Rock has already been announced. If we’re lucky maybe they will be able to get Stephen King himself to write some episodes to make it more authentic. Sure King has some mind bending material but at least it all comes together in the end. So that brings us to just went on in the season finale. So buckle up, because here we go on this wild ride.
Here are the facts, as I understand them. There are two Henry Deavers. The first we met at the beginning, the adopted child of Ruth Deaver, the other the mysterious prisoner we met in the basement of Shawshank. Prisoner Henry wants adopted Henry to help him back to his universe. However, adopted Henry just ends up putting prisoner Henry back where he came from, and taking charge of his well-being. Ruth passed away and was buried with Alan, and adopted Henry moved in to her home.
We never get to find out what or if Wendell experienced in his stop at Salem’s Lot. So as far as what is going on, I’m just going to assume that the town is actually purgatory with mild sinners? Who knows at this point all we can do is wait for season 2 and hope it gets better.
