Halloween 2018: Carpenter stops original ending from getting altered

Director David Gordon Green almost recreated the original Halloween ending in the upcoming Blumhouse film….until John Carpenter stepped in.

The new Halloween almost became the original…

According to Comicbook.com, history was almost recreated in Haddonfield. With the upcoming Halloween taking place 40 years in the aftermath of John Carpenter’s original, you’d expect close connections between the two. In fact, Director David Gordon Green wanted the two so related that there was strong talks of recreating the ’78 classic’s original ending. That is, until the master of horror stepped in…

Here’s what Green is saying about the initial idea:

"“Even in the script going into production, we were going to refilm the end of the original film from a different perspective. We had this very complicated overhead view of Loomis shooting the gun, Michael going over and then the apprehension, assuming everybody was going to need a little bit to get back up to speed with where we are and we haven’t seen the movie in a long time or we’ve never seen the movie, had to invite everyone to the party and that kind of thing. We kept pushing it off.”"

The filmmaker, who’s about to unleash his vision of Haddonfield next month, goes on to talk about Carpenter steeping in:

"“This was Carpenter actually calming me down on set,” Green pointed out. “I’m like, ‘Nobody’s going to know what’s happening and where we’re coming from.’ He’s like, ‘Just trust ‘em and leave ‘em alone and let ‘em figure it out.’”"

More from Halloween

That John Carpenter. Always in the clutch with the solution.

I honestly don’t know how to feel about the situation. As a fan, and knowing how much Green and Danny McBride love the franchise, seeing the result sounds intriguing. If done correctly, it could be a nice homage and experience for diehards.

But on the other hand, Carpenter’s right. Aside from being a cool idea and something appealing visually and with a hint of nostalgia, it’s just clutter. Overuse of exposition is one of the easiest ways to weight down a story. This is Halloween, everyone knows what happened 40 years ago. Even if you haven’t see it, discerning what’s happening will probably be easy — it’s seemingly a simple revenge tale…..it’s not Inception.
