3. Sid and Nancy

Classic horror movies like Halloween and Friday the 13th start their stories in warm and sunny settings. The horrors happen when the sun goes down and things get chilly.

Sid and Nancy is the story of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious (Gary Oldman) and his girlfriend Nancy Spungeon (Chloe Webb). Their story starts in bright, shiny, and fun settings. The music is a mix of punk, reggae, and Monkee’s covers. But the ill-fated lovers progressively become addicted to heroine. They find the drugs at dusk, take them at night, and wake up vitalized in early morning sunlight.

This movie is not pro-drugs. Things gradually slide into darkness. The color of the shots is faded to an almost black and white level. It’s truly depressing.

Sid and Nancy’s relationship turns into something like the plot of 28 Days Later. There are a lot of blackouts. People die during the blackouts. And there’s constant awareness that you may have to kill your lover at a moment’s notice if they turn into a zombie. Like the climax of 28 Days Later, Sid and Nancy end up quarantining themselves from society. But, unlike 28 Days Later, it’s Sid and Nancy that have a problem. It ends in a prolonged, truly disturbing death.

Despite a tacked on punk-happy ending that makes you question the true motives of the movie, Sid and Nancy will stay with you.
