John Carpenter would love to direct a new film
Master of horror John Carpenter is open to making a new film, just not the one you are probably expecting.
There are many things that John Carpenter can do. The multi-skilled director is also a screenwriter, editor, composer, musician, and can jump from horror and science fiction to martial arts and action films without hesitation. But without doubt, his legacy is in the horror genre, with films like The Thing, the remake of Village of the Damned, and – of course – Halloween.
However, it’s been a while since he stepped behind the camera, with his last film being The Ward, in 2010, a supernatural psychological horror film starring Amber Heard, Mamie Gummer, and Danielle Panabaker, that wasn’t well received by neither viewers or critics. Since then, Carpenter has focused on his musical career, releasing three studio albums , one remix album, and one EP between 2015 and 2017. That’s good and all, but the question remains: will Carpenter go back to the director’s chair someday?
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Carpenter addressed this, saying he has not retired from directing and still looks at scripts, so there’s hope we could see another film from him – it just has to be the right story, and definitely not a sequel to The Thing (apologies to all fans out there hoping for a sequel).
"“I would love to direct something, if it’s the right thing to do at my age. I’m not going to make another Thing, I’ll tell you that. I’m not going to the Arctic again. I’m not going to do that. I want to take it easy. I want to enjoy myself!”"
Carpenter added that he would like to do something in Europe, specifically in Venice, but he doesn’t have a story for it (or at least not for now). For now, his “job”, as he explains, is all about watching basketball and playing video-games. Not bad, if we’re being honest, but we can’t deny it would be nice to have a brand new horror film from him.
Although he hasn’t taken on directing duties in eight years, he hasn’t been too far from the filmmaking world. He recently served as executive producer on David Gordon Green’s upcoming Halloween, which is a direct sequel to his original film. Not only that: he also worked on the film’s score alongside his son, Cody Carpenter. Let us never forget that, while he only directed the very first Halloween film, he provided the score for the first three installments in the Halloween franchise. It feels good to have him back, even if just as composer.
While he enjoys life, making music and watching basketball, and finds a story interesting enough to bring him back, we can enjoy Halloween, to be released on October 19.
