John Carpenter: Could They Live be his next sequel?

John Carpenter is on a roll. Halloween is heading back into theaters this weekend, last month he teased a possible Prince of Darkness television series, could a They Live sequel be next on his list of projects?

Could They Live Rise Again?

John Carpenter is the horror master. This is an undeniable and irrefutable fact. Lately, he is everywhere. The long-awaited David Gordon Green version of Halloween will be opening this weekend. Carpenter provided the score and supported the production.

Last month, he teased a possible Prince of Darkness television series. In a recent interview with Den of Geek, when the subject of a They Live sequel came up, Carpenter made some intriguing remarks.

The now 30-year-old picture about the alien invasion of Earth provided a commentary on rampant consumerism as well as the “dumbing down” of America. While it was a highly entertaining flick, it also delivered a message much in the same way George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead did.

In 2018, we can look around and while we have advanced technology, the societal landscape is harsher and unforgiving. It seems like it could be perfect fodder for a fresh look at the old Roddy Piper starrer.

What exactly does John Carpenter think? Does he feel like he might have something relevant to say about these difficult times through the eyes of a horror movie? Here is how the director responded when Den of Geek posed that question:

"“Well, I’m not gonna tell you about that, because it might be closer to reality than you think.”"

Wait and See

Apparently, in the past, there was a remake being developed which Carpenter did confirm.

“There was a feature film. It was a feature film called Resistance, written by, oh, the guy who did the Apes movies. Matt Reeves. But then he moved on, and so the sequel is, well, we’ll see. We’ll just have to see.”

That was a very interesting and non-committal yet revealing response. Could the horror master have another potential project in the works? For right now, he has been very vocal about just hanging out at his house and playing video games and watching basketball.

Is there something that would motivate him to sit in the director’s chair again? Would he consider helming a new picture?

"“Yeah. Sure, I would. I would. There are some ideas floating around. But see, I’m working on those. I’m not gonna tell you about them, but yeah, there’s a bunch. There’s a science fiction novel or two I’d love to do. We’ll see.”"

Until he is ready, we can be content with watching Halloween on the silver screen and reliving the glory days by watching DVDs or Blu-rays of his old movies.
