7. Season 4, American Horror Story: Freak Show, episode 1, “Monsters Among Us”

Why it’s so frightening: Depending on what you’re into, the entire Freak Show season is either disgusting, terrifying, or both! The first episode did not do us any favors and pulls back no punches!

Let’s get right to the most shocking scene, Penny (Grace Gummer) participates in an orgy with the freaks at the Freak Show. This scene really makes you wish live television had a fast-forward option. If you got to watch this scene on Netflix or On Demand, I envy you!

This orgy is very questionable, Penny was given opium, so it really should be considered as rape. Way to kick things off, Freak Show. Penny’s strict father learns about her actions and does what a reasonable father would do. Kidding! This monster drugs his daughter, too, and while she’s passed out changes her entire look. I’m not just talking about a new style. Daddy Dearest tattoos Penny’s face, shaves her head, and splits her tongue in two, giving her a reptile look. The fact that her own father would do this is horrifying.

By the end of “Monsters Among Us,” we’re not sure what shocked us more, the orgy or Reptile Penny. Yeah, probably the orgy. This episode also introduces viewers to one of the creepiest characters in the series, one that should get his own Halloween special or spin-off, Twisty the Clown!
