12. Season 6, American Horror Story: Roanoke, episode 5, Chapter 5

Why it’s so frightening: The Roanoke horrors continue in Episode 5. In this chapter, audiences dive into the history of Edward Mott (Evan Peters). But learning about him isn’t the worst thing about this episode. The most haunting scenes in “Chapter 5” are when the Polks capture the Millers. The Polks are a family of cannibals, add incest to the mix as well.

The repulsive family made a deal with the Butcher over 200 years ago: As long as the Butcher’s Roanoke colony have fresh, innocent blood every year to sacrifice, they’ll be left alone. All under the condition that, when it’s slow year and no one comes by their property for them to hunt, it’s the Polks who must provide them with the sacrifice. Unfortunately, for the Millers, this means the Polks will be taking them back to the house.

Their escape doesn’t seem possible, but the Millers manage to do it. Once they are delivered to the Butcher, she gives a speech and then commands for the young girl, Flora, to be killed first. She is saved at the last-minute by the Butcher’s own son, who grabs his mother and throws her and himself in the fire. This is the episode the MIllers are finally able to escape, or so they thought.

They arrive at a hotel safely, but with many nightmares. And it’s not long after that they find themselves back to where it all happened. Little did they know, there really is no escaping the spirits of that house, no matter how far you go.
