11. Season 2, American Horror Story: Asylum, episode 9, The Coat Hanger

Why it’s so frightening: From the title of this episode alone, you can already tell it’s not pleasant. Not that any episode in this series is ever pleasant, it is, after all, a drama-horror. But there are only so many things you can do with a coat hanger, and this season taking place in the 1960s can really only mean one thing..

American Horror Story: Asylum is my personal favorite and arguably the most frightening season in the series. It does, however, attempt to cover a little too much. We’re talking aliens, demons, torture, twisted doctors, you name it! But this scene in particular doesn’t have any supernatural element to it. It’s just raw horror and sadness.

Lana (Sarah Paulson) has just discovered she is pregnant with Dr. Oliver Thredson’s (Zachary Quinto) baby, the evil man and sick doctor who raped her. Not wanting to give birth to a child she believes would one day become a monster like the father, she decides to have an abortion. It wasn’t easy to get an abortion back in the 1960s, however. Not to mention, no one was willing to help Lana. She didn’t even belong in the asylum and confided on no one. Lana decides to take matters into her own hands, literally! She grabs a coat hanger and gets to it. It’s not easy to watch, arguably one of the most difficult scenes in the entire series. Lana is crushed when she realizes it didn’t work.
