9. Season 6, American Horror Story: Roanoke, episode 4, “Chapter 4”

Why it’s so frightening: Whether it’s a TV show or a movie, when it’s being based on true events it makes it so much more creepy! And the fourth episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke does the trick!

Thomasin White, portrayed by Kathy Bates, was the leader of the Lost Colony of Roanoke. The episode takes us back in time to illustrate the rise and fall of Thomasin. She’s the boss, and not a very nice one. After being kicked out under accusations of dark magic and left for dead, she seeks revenge. Alone, Thomasin encounters Scathach, the first Supreme witch. The Scathach helps Thomasin out by killing the entire colony, but then proceeds to kill Thomasin herself.

A warning to those who haven’t watched this season and wish to avoid gore: This is not the episode you want to be watching. Either skip the scenes and have a friend fill you in or read a quick recap on “Chapter 4.” The killings are brutal, and there are many! The last one is particularly difficult to watch, it’s Cricket (Leslie Jordan) getting disemboweled by the Butcher. She wants to be sure the Miller family is watching, using this as a warning that they are next. Sure enough, Shelby Miller (Sarah Paulson) and Matt Miller (Cuba Gooding Jr.) are getting a great view of the horrifying event.

On the bright side, Roanoke features a lot of callbacks to previous seasons. Including Coven (the first ever Supreme) and Freak Show (Mott family, builder of the house).
