8. Season 3, American Horror Story: Coven, episode 1, “Bitchcraft”

Why it’s so frightening: That’s right, the very first episode! From the start, American Horror Story: Coven kicked off with top fears! Even the opening sequence for Coven is arguably the most creepy in the entire series. “Bitchcraft” begins with a flashback of the life of a character we’ll closely be following the remaining of the season, Delphine LaLaurie (Kathy Bates).

Only seconds into the season premiere of Coven and a character is already lathering human blood on their face. What are we in for?! Delphine LaLaurie complains the blood is not fresh enough. Savage! And speaking of violent, in minutes there’s already torture happening. The racism is also tough to look at and listen to. There was a lot of controversy surrounding this season because of this and the topics it covers. But, on the bright side, it did at least help bring awareness to the cruelty.

Love the horrors American Horror Story brings, but aren’t fond of the gore? Coven is a season you may want to skip, especially several violent and bloody scenes that take place in Episode 1, “Bitchcraft.”

The season premiere also introduces all the witches and Cordelia (Sarah Paulson) gives a speech about how important it is to stick together. Their bond is important, especially after we see the burning at the stake of Misty Day (Lily Rabe). Sisterhood is certainly easier said than done, though! We quickly learn a lot of betrayal and violence will be highlighted this season.

As if all of that wasn’t enough, “Bitchcraft” also includes the gang rape of Madison (Emma Roberts) by a group of frat boys. And, in a rage, Madison flips their bus over as they try to escape. Over all, it’s not an easy episode to watch.
