Child’s Play: Don Mancini (series creator) strongly against MGM reboot

With the Child’s Play series both ongoing and getting a reboot, Don Mancini is opening up about the MGM remake. It’s time to play…

The father of Child’s Play is speaking up…

According to Bloody-Disgusting, Don Mancini isn’t playing around. After MGM announced a reboot of Child’s Play, the horror world began wondering the series creator thought of a Chucky-less “Chucky” movie. Well, now we have word, and let’s just say he’s not a fan…

Here’s what Mancini is saying about “Buddi” trying to take the terror toy throne on a recent episode of Post Mortem with horror icon Mick Garris:

"“MGM retained the rights to the first movie, so they’re rebooting that. They asked [producer] David Kirschner and I if we wanted to be executive producers. We said no thank you, because we have our ongoing thriving business with Chucky. Obviously my feelings were hurt. Ya know, I had just done two movies… forgive me if I sound defensive, [they] were both at 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. Even though they didn’t get theatrical releases, they were well regarded. And I did create the character and nurture the franchise for three fucking decades.”"

Mancini, who recently kept Chucky alive with Cult of Chucky, goes on to say:

"“So when someone says, ‘Oh yeah, we would love to have your name on the film’… it was hard not to feel like I was being patronized. They just wanted our approval. Which I strenuously denied them. I hesitate to say too much about it because I don’t want to sound like I’m belly-aching too much. But the producers of that movie are the producers of IT (2017). How would they feel if there was some legal loophole that allowed David Kirschner and I to swoop in and make our own IT movie with our own version of Pennywise and say, ‘Hey guys, we would love to put your names on it.’ I imagine they wouldn’t like it. That’s how I feel.”"

Some people may not like Mancini’s bluntness, but you really can’t blame the guy…

Hypothetically speaking, what if MGM’s new take is huge at the box office. After initial resistance, early buzz is strong and word of mouth takes over. What if the film is massive and spawns a franchise of its own. It’s highly possible that Universal could stop the original series to due to the success.

Then again, that hypothetical could be a good thing for the veteran writer. Playing devil’s advocate, the reboot being a smash could reignite interest in the original franchise. This could lead to bigger numbers for the upcoming TV series. Also, wouldn’t he get some money from sequels as creator? I’m no Larry Zerner but I think that’s how it works….

Child’s Play stars Aubrey Plaza, Brian Tyree Henry and Gabriel Bateman. Lars Klevberg directs a screenplay by Tyler Burton Smith, based on characters by Don Mancini. KatzSmith Productions and Oddfellows Entertainment are producing, with MGM handling distribution. Buddi comes to life June 21, 2019.
