Two years later, the dynamic duo was back. This time, Chris Carter said he learned his lesson and fans would get the standalone episodes that they craved with less focus on the mythology. He brought back old friends like Dean Haglund and Karin Konoval.

We also had a new cast member in Barbara Hershey. Haley Joel Osment even showed up for an episode with Mitch Pileggi. Darin Morgan penned a brilliant episode, The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat.

Despite the fact that we finally got to meet Scully and Mulder’s teenage son, William played by Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon’s son, Miles, (like Ash vs Evil Dead) the ratings declined to the point where no one cared anymore. The X-Files lost its preternatural glow.

Gillian Anderson decided to move on. David Duchovny and Chris Carter said they would continue if Fox wanted another season. However, none of this was meant to be. And so, after Mar. 21, 2018, the ratings stalwart, the fan favorite ended its run at Fox forever.
