Netflix horror additions to stream in January for a happy new year
By Carla Davis
The further away from Halloween we get, the slimmer the pickings get where streaming horror is concerned. Still, Netflix does have a few intriguing offerings for the new year.
01/01:
Godzilla – I am not sure which version of the Japanese prehistoric monster we are looking at here, but you can certainly check it out.
I Know What You Did Last Summer – Starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Freddie Prinze, Jr., this 1997 slasher was written by Kevin Williamson (of Scream fame). Four teenagers find themselves being hunted down by a killer wielding a hook a year after they are part of a fatal hit and run accident.
Pan’s Labyrinth – A dark, beautiful fantasy, this Guillermo del Toro film received a 22-minute standing ovation when it premiered at Cannes. It won three of its six Academy Award nominations, and is considered to be one of the best films of 2006. If you haven’t seen this one yet, I highly recommend it!

The Addams Family – Based on cartoonist Charles Adams’ darkly funny cartoon, as well as the follow-up tv series, The Addams family (featuring the perfectly-cast Anjelica Houston, Raul Julia and Christina Ricci) was a huge success. Believing they have been found by a long lost relative, the Addams family become victim to an plot intended to swindle them out of their considerable fortune.
The Mummy – Released in 1999, The Mummy was loosely based on the 1932 film of the same name. Brandon Fraser, Rachel Weisz and John Hannah travel to Hamunaptra, where they awaken a long-dead high priest named Imhotep. With eye-popping special effects and a fun, engaging storyline, The Mummy did well enough to inspire a sequel.
The Mummy Returns – The general consensus was that this sequel focused too much on its spectacular special effects, and not enough on the characters. Fraser, Weisz and Hannah returned, but the story was a weak copy of the original. Still a fun watch, in my opinion.
The Strangers – This is one of my favorite horror films! A harrowing, edge-of-your seat stalker movie, The Strangers features Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a couple staying in a secluded home for a weekend. After attending a wedding, they are terrorized by three strangers wearing the creepiest masks ever. The ending of this movie was positively gut-wrenching.

01/09:
Godzilla: The Planet Eater – The 34th film in the Godzilla franchise sees Ghidorah come into the modern universe of Godzilla. This is a Netflix exclusive.

01/18:
IO – In this Netflix exclusive, a teenage girl is one of the few survivors left on earth, and struggles to save her planet before she is left stranded.
01/24:
Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes – I am a true crime enthusiast, so this four-episode documentary series is the January Netflix offering that I am most looking forward to! It makes use of over 100 hours of audio interviews between the infamous serial killer and journalists Stephen G. Michaud and Hugh Aynesworth. The series begins streaming on the 30th anniversary of Bundy’s execution (which was performed in my home state of Florida).
Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation – A star-studded 2018 animated comedy, this one features the voice talents of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, David Spade, Steve Buscemi,, Fran Drescher and Mel Brooks. Count Dracula and his besties decide to take a cruise, not knowing that the ship’s other guests include the Van Helsings. Uh-oh!
01/25:
Animas – From the company behind the (REC) films, Animas tells of Alex, a young woman who is friends with a shy, insecure boy named Abraham. When Abraham’s father dies in a very strange accident, Alex begins to lose track of reality.

Kingdom – This new Netflix Series is set in a kingdom that has been nearly destroyed by famine. As rumors of the king’s death begin to make the rounds, so does a plague the makes those infected immune to death. In addition, the affected become hungry for human flesh. The crown prince attempts to get to the bottom of his kingdom’s problems and save his people.
01/27:
Z Nation: Season 5 – In the next to last season of Syfy’s zombie apocalypse series, Murphy and friends are on a trek to Newmerica, adding to the number of survivors in their group along the way. Meanwhile, Warren is rescued by a mysterious, handsome fellow named Cooper.
